How to Make Your Blog Successful With Pillar Content.
It is pretty common… bloggers are always looking to learn how to increase blog traffic to their site.
You can blog all day long, but what is the point if nobody stops by and reads your content?
You can do SEO and that will help a lot. But what can you do to make your blog more successful?
One way is to create a blog post with significant content… or in other words a pillar article.
What are Blog Posts that Contain Pillar Content?
A term coined and defined by Yaro Starak from Entrepreur’s Journey:
“A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.”
If you have been following our blog for a while, you will notice that we have overall increased the length of our blog posts. Initially we strove to have at least 500 words in our blog posts, though we didn’t always hold true to that goal.
Then over the past few months we decided to increase the amount of content on each blog post. Our new target is at least 800 words, if not 1000.
What was the effect of our pillar content?
We found that not only did our readers stay on the page longer (which Google loves), but we also found that our traffic overall increased.
Why Did Pillar Content Help with Increasing Blog Traffic?
I believe there are several factors as to why these pillar articles helped in increasing our blog traffic.
Lots of Content to Read
The more there is to read, the longer someone is on the webpage. And Google loves it when visitors are on your webpage for a long period of time.
Just make sure the content is easy to read… shorter sentences and shorter paragraphs. You also need to break it up with pictures and headings otherwise it will just be a large and intimidating block of text to read.
Take the time to make sure your grammar and spelling is also good because that is key to not frustrating your reader. Remember… the point is to get them to read the ENTIRE article!
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
The mission of Google is to end search.
And if you have a large block of text based around a few main keywords then Google will recognize that this could be an authority site for those keywords. It would also be easier to insert those keywords more naturally into the larger block of text.
Now imagine how a 5000-7000 word blog post would look to Google? With supporting imbedded video. That is where I would like to head in the near future.
And then once you have this large block of text, future blog posts can reference this pillar content for more information… adding to your backlinks.
Spread the Word!
Not only will Google see your pillar content as being the place to end search, so will your visitors. Imagine the power of having your visitors SHARE your work with others because you created this authority blog post. All the answers are in ONE SPOT.
This will create new traffic and more backlinks.
All of this is definite goodness.
The Pillar Content Challenge!
I am challenging myself to write one 5,000-7,000 blog post every 30 days until the end of the year, and monitoring the results.
I have heard of cases where traffic went up as much as 25% just with a few of these pillar content articles.
And I am extending this challenge to you.
If you write a blog post of at least 2,500 words between now and the end of the year, send me an email with one pillar article that you’ve written after today, and I’ll compile a huge list of these articles and link them in a blog post after the new year. You can write more than one, but please only send me one article with pillar content.
We’ll have a little public vote to see which one people like the best, with a prize for the winner too.
It doesn’t matter what niche you’re in… just create an amazing tutorial-style blog post for your readers and send me the link when it is published. Your headline plays a major role in the vote (since that’s the text people will click on the list), so definitely think twice about your attention grabbing headline.
Good luck, and I’m looking forward to your email.
