What Is SEM Search Engine Marketing

Do you have a website and now are looking to learn what is SEM?

Maybe you heard about SEM marketing from a friend or business colleague, or even from a search on the internet.  Now you want to learn more about SEM and how it can work for you.

Well, you found the right place!

Today I want to talk to you about what is SEM and whether it’s right for you.

What Is SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, is a method of internet marketing where you focus on getting paid search engine results. It means that when someone types in a specific term into a search engine like Google that you try to show up as close you can to the top of the page by bidding on the position. You typically only pay when someone clicks on the ad.

This is different than SEO because in SEO you try to organically get traffic to your website by building backlinks to your content so that it shows up higher in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages).

SEM includes both technical and creative elements to help improve your quality score (which affects how often you show up and how much you have to pay per click), drive traffic, and increase awareness in search engines.

There are many aspects of SEM ranging from the words you include on your website to the wording on the ad itself. Sometimes SEM results can be improved by simply arranging your website to make sure it is structured in a way to show that it matches the keyword and the visitor finds what he is looking for.

What Do I Do With The Traffic?

An important aspect of SEM is what you do with the visitor once he arrives.  Too often people do SEM and don’t really focus on what they do with the visitor when he finally arrives.  That results in a lot of wasted opportunities (and wasted money).

That’s where marketing funnels come into play.  They can help turn that traffic into paying customers.

Why Does My Website Need SEM?

The majority of web traffic originates from search engines like GoogleBing, and Yahoo. Now I know social media and other types of traffic can get visits to your website, search engines are the primary method of navigation for most internet users.

What do you do when you want to find something online? You mostly likely use a search engine.

Look at it this way: search engines are unique in that they provide targeted traffic. People type in specifically what they are looking for and the paid ads on the search engine then get shown before any other results. You don’t have to work as hard to get your content ranked (though I recommend doing a combination of SEO and SEM).

Search queries are the words users type into the search box. These words carry a lot of value because the traffic is VERY targeted. It has been shown that targeted traffic to a website can provide exposure and revenue like no other form of marketing. That means investing in SEM (and SEO) can have an exception rate of return compared to other types of marketing and promotion.

Can I Do SEM Myself?

SEM seems pretty simple… but actually to do it effectively it can get pretty complex.  But as long as you understand the basics you may be able to get some results.  Even knowing some of the basics can make a HUGE difference. Free SEMeducation is available all over the internet, including from the blog on this website. Combine this with some practice and you are well on your way to getting good at SEM.

Depending on your available time, your wiliness to learn, the complexity of your website, and the competition for your keywords, you may decide you need an expert to handle things for you. Companies that practice SEM (and SEO) for other companies can vary: some have a highly specialized focus, while others may take a broader more general approach.

In any case, it’s good to have a firm grasp of core concepts so that you can intelligently make the right decisions for your needs.
